Intro - Moving your Car to Ontario
* When I first moved to Ontario I was kind of clueless as to how to transfer my car from my old province of New Brunswick to Ontario. After figuring out the steps, I figured I'd post 'em here for any lucky google folks.

Registering / Licensing your vehicle in Ontario
* General Ontario Automobile Licensing information is available here: www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dandv/vehicle/index.html .
* A list of Licensing/Registration offices is located here: www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dandv/officeloc.htm . Since I was moving from out-of-province, I interacted directly a 'Private Issuing Office'.
* If you are like me and moved here from out-of-province, then the specific steps for 'Licensing a Vehicle that is Registered in Another Jurisdiction' are located here: www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dandv/vehicle/rgoutcan.htm
* I will break the steps for 'Licensing a Vehicle that is Registered in Another Jurisdiction' below...
|
Step 1: Get an Ontario Driver's License
* Steps for getting an Ontario Driver's License are here: www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dandv/driver/drvlicen.htm .
* More specifically, if you want to exchange an out-of-province driver's license (like mine from New Brunswick), then go here for instructions: www.drivetest.ca/en/license/ExchangeOutProv.aspx .
* A list of driver examination centres where you can get your driver's license is located here: www.drivetest.ca/en/loc/dec.aspx
* You are required to provide documentation stating your legal name, date of birth and signature. Valid documentation is listed here: www.drivetest.ca/en/license/HowToApply.aspx

Step 2: Previous Registration Permit
* Original copy of the vehicle registration permit in your name.
* If it is not in your name, then a signed Bill of Sale from the previous owner is required. If it is registered to one of your parents, then they simply state it is a gift of $0. The bill of sale must contain the Model, Make, Year & VIN.
* Note if you transfer ownership at the time of registration, you will likely be required to pay provincial sales tax (RST) on the value indicated on the bill of sale.
* If your vehicle was previously registered in Ontario, then you will need a Sworn Statement in the presence of a Commissionaire. Contact the Driver and Vehicle Licence Issuing Offices with your VIN to determine if you must complete this step and if so, to schedule a time when the Commissionaire will be available.
|
Step 3: Emission Test
* Get a Drive Clean Vehicle Emissions Pass Report. This report is valid for 1 year.
* Go here to find the Emissions test facility closest to you: www.driveclean.com/cgi-dir/mqinterconnect.cgi?link=find .
* For more information on the Drive Clean Program, call the Drive Clean Call Centre at 1-888-758-2999 or visit the Drive Clean Website
|
Step 4: Mechanical Safety
* Get a Mechanical Safety Standards Certificate. This certificate is only valid for 36 days.
* Contact a local service station to find out if they provide this service.
* If your car was rebuilt in your province (as was the case with mine), then it is more tricky & expensive to transfer your car because it will be "branded" as salvage material and "unfit" to drive. You will need a structural safety (costs ~$400) and documentation from your home province. Contact the Driver and Vehicle Licence Issuing Offices for more information. Note: DO NOT go to Spartan on Bank St.
|
Step 5: Car Insurance
* You need to find Ontario car insurance coverage and provide the insurance company's name & policy number.
* Note: You have to set up your Ontario car insurance to commence the same day that you register/license your car in Ontario.
* Here is a list of car insurance companies with whom I inquired, along with my quote in brackets. Note that several can provide online quotes:
- Aviva Traders - www.psac-groupinsurance.com - 1.877.880.5029 - ($692)

Step 6: Extra stuff you need
* Odometer reading from your vehicle.
* Completed Application for Registration. Available only at the Driver and Vehicle Licence Issuing Offices . This can be done last, the day you go in to register your vehicle.
|
The other direction: Ontario to NB
* Transferring ownership on a vehicle from Ontario to NB is a bit more simple.
* If you are transferring a car in the opposite direction, from Ontario to New Brunswick, then the number to call for information is 506.453.2834
* A vehicle can only be "gifted" (non-taxable) if ownership is transferred from PEI or Nova Scotia to New Brunswick
* For a vehicle registered in Ontario to be transferred to anyone (including a family member), tax must be paid according to these rules:
(a) If the car is 1995 or newer, tax is paid based on the lowest "Red Book" value of the car.
(b) If the car is older than 1995, you must have the car appraised by an approved car dealership ($5-$50) and tax is paid based on the appraised price.
The following are required to transfer ownership:
* A signed Bill of Sale from the seller is required. The bill of sale must contain the Model, Make, Year, license plate number, car value & VIN.
* New Brunswick Inspection (Note: Unlike Ontario, there are no special steps required for a rebuilt car)
* Proof of insurance.
* Registration signed off by the seller.
