Guerilla Black
Guerilla City
Guerilla Black
Virgin/EMI
Ranking 2.75/5

Guerilla Black, for those who haven't heard, sounds and looks quite similar to the late Notorious B.I.G. I've heard a lot of people rip into Guerilla Black for changing his lyrical style and flow to imitate B.I.G., even earning nicknames of Guerilla Vanilli. Honestly, I miss Biggie, and hearing something similar satisfied my palate.

Guerilla City comes off like an amateur Biggie album, as I found myself skipping several songs, mostly the lame R&B joints. As well, his rhymes schemes and lyrical content are at times lacking. However, the good songs impressed me enough to keep me bumping this album for longer than normal.

'My First' is one of my favorites, recounting stories about Guerilla's first love that died. 'Yessir' is a Nascar-paced song. The hard-hitting beat on 'Sunrise' impresses. 'Say What' is a lyrical-centered song dedicated to Eazy-E, which had several lines stuck in my head. The mediocre songs I didn't skip are: 'Hearts of Fire,' 'Guerilla City,' 'Trixxx' and 'What We Gonna Do.'

Guerilla City has some amazing songs, although devoid of much deep lyrical content, making this album worthy of checking out. However, there are a number of weak songs that drag this album down. Hopefully with time, Guerilla Black's writing will improve while sticking to the grimy themes making certain songs impressive.
